Making Rhode Island public schools great for every child!
Dec 4

12/4/2009

Last night the Westerly School Committee, in a 4-3 vote, rejected the tentative agreement that teachers had already ratified. The agreement containd several major concessions by the teachers, including monetary items. The four caved to the pressure of groups such as the Rhode Island Statewide Coalition and voted down the negotiated agreement. President Purtill stated that maybe it is time for the new commissioner to establish a Code of Professional Responsibility for school committees and start pushing for state education funding for all schools and students, not just charter schools and a few. He added that the commissioner says that the teachers she meets with are excited and support her ideas but he has heard none of that. Morale is at an all time low and the actions of the four in Westerly certainly do not help.
