The National Education Association Rhode Island (NEARI) announced today that Doris Reilly, a secretary at Fogarty Memorial Elementary School in Glocester, has been named the 2026 NEARI Education Support Professional of the Year. She was honored in November with the Gail Colburn Award at NEARI’s annual celebration recognizing the contributions of Education Support Professionals (ESPs) across Rhode Island.
Education Support Professionals are the Pre-K to college support staff – teacher assistants, paraprofessionals, custodians, secretaries, office managers, and more – who play an essential role in ensuring student success and keeping Rhode Island’s schools running every day.
Reilly began her career 25 years ago as a teacher assistant hoping to spend more time with her young family. She soon discovered a calling to support students with academic and behavioral challenges. From the start, she felt a deep connection to these students and approached them with respect, compassion, and authenticity. In turn, she found herself making a meaningful difference. Her ability to listen and build trust quickly made her a go-to support for students who needed extra encouragement and understanding.
Since 2010, Reilly has served as president of the Glocester Education Support Professionals local union. The role, she says, has taught her invaluable lessons about advocacy, leadership, and the power of collective voice. She has worked to ensure every ESP member feels included, supported, and heard – reflecting her belief that the union belongs to its members, not just its president.
“Doris Reilly represents the very best of what it means to be an Education Support Professional,” said NEARI President Val Lawson. “Her compassion for students, dedication to families, and advocacy for colleagues make her a true leader. We are proud to honor her as our ESP of the Year.”
Today, Reilly serves as the principal’s secretary, where her office has become a welcoming space for students who need a break or someone to talk to. Whether they are helping with small tasks, checking the school cameras, or simply taking a moment to reset, Reilly says these visits are among her favorite parts of the day.
“Doris’s support extends far beyond the office. She has worked directly with students, supported teachers, and built strong partnerships with families,” said Principal Tammy Strik. “Her warmth, professionalism, and dedication make her a cornerstone of Fogarty Memorial School.”
Reflecting on her career, Reilly said, “Throughout my years in education, I have found meaning and fulfillment in building relationships, supporting students, and being a trusted resource for staff and families. I am proud of the work I’ve done, the connections I’ve built, and the community I continue to serve.”
She added, “Looking ahead, I hope to use my experience to mentor new staff, strengthen collaboration across the school community, and support students and families in meaningful ways. My career has shown me that education is not just about academics – it is about compassion, connection, and helping others grow. That is what I hope to be remembered for.”
