What is Bread and Roses?
The slogan "Bread and Roses" was popularized during the 1912 Lawrence textile strike, where immigrant women workers demanded fair wages and humane working conditions. The phrase has since become a powerful symbol for the importance of both material well-being and human fulfillment and represents the idea that a full life is not only about the basic necessities like food ("bread") but also access to finer things like art and culture ("roses").
As a union representing thousands of educators, support professionals, and professional staff in Rhode Island, NEARI believes our mission goes beyond advocating for fair wages and the best possible working conditions. We also celebrate the creativity, passion, and achievements of our members beyond the workplace.
The Bread and Roses Project has been established to highlight and promote the artistic endeavors of NEARI members – whether you spend your (precious little) free time with photography, painting, sculpting, pottery, poetry, or any other medium.
