As of April 2025, the Trump administration has shut down 5 of the 12 regional offices that support Head Start programs and disrupted funding for local Head Start centers, making it harder for children and families to get the help they need. Now, they are considering ending the entire program.
Eliminating Head Start will cost millions of children their first chance at a strong foundation for learning and it will disrupt household stability, pushing families into poverty. Together, we can protect Head Start and the future it promises to every child.
Early Learning Opportunities That Every Child Deserves
Head Start provides comprehensive early learning, health, nutrition, and family support services for children from under-resourced families in every state and congressional district. Since its inception in 1965, Head Start—and subsequently, Early Head Start for infants and toddlers—has transformed the lives of more than 37 million children and families living in poverty.
Today, more than 1,700 Head Start programs exist across the country and are supported by more than a quarter of a million educators committed to student well-being. Head Start programs are designed to promote school readiness for children from birth to age 5 in under-resourced communities by nurturing every aspect of a child’s development (the “whole child”).
Its impact goes beyond early education: Head Start strengthens entire families, empowering parents and caregivers to build brighter futures alongside their children. Services include but are not limited to:
- Early learning (preparing children academically, socially, and emotionally to succeed in school);
- Health and nutrition (ensuring children have healthy meals, health screenings, and necessary referrals); and
- Family well-being opportunities (supporting family goals and access to resources).

Dismantling early childhood education programs will have ripple effects for children, families, and communities. Communities already facing child care shortages would see “child care deserts” expand, making economic recovery even harder.
