Collection Drive in your Local!
Winter in Rhode Island can be tough, especially for children and families who struggle to afford everyday essentials. This year, NEARI is launching NEARI HUGS, a statewide winter clothing drive to collect four simple but important items that help kids stay warm, comfortable, and ready for whatever the day brings.
HUGS stands for:
- H - Hats
- U - Underwear
- G - Gloves and mittens
- S - Socks
From November 9 through December 18, we're inviting NEARI Local unions and members across the Ocean State to join us in collecting these essentials for children in need.
How Your Local Can Participate
We're making it easy for Locals to spread the warmth! Participating Locals can pick up a NEARI HUGS collection bin, bring it back to their school or workplace, and encourage members and friends to contribute.
Important Dates:
- November 9: NEARI HUGS officially kicks off.
- November 16: First opportunity to pick up collection bins or drop off donations at the NEARI Executive Committee meeting.
- December 18: Collection drive concludes, all donations must be at 99 Bald Hill Rd.
- January 2027: Donations will be distributed to community organizations serving Rhode Island children.
Where Will the HUGS Go?
The need for warm clothing doesn't end when the holidays are over. That's why NEARI plans to distribute donations after the first of the year, helping children and families during some of Rhode Island's coldest winter months.
Planned community partners include:
- Boys & Girls Club of East Providence
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center in Newport
- Jonnycake Center in South Kingstown
- Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland
- Foster Forward, which supports children and youth in foster care across the state
